Sworn to Raise - Terah Edun
Sworn to Raise is fascinating. Ciardis goes from rags to riches. She grew up with nothing, working as a cleaner when she is noticed by a Court Companion. She becomes a initiate of the Court Companion's Guild. Court Companions are trained in many things, they have power and social standing, but they are not wives. Wives are property, Court Companion's are business partners with benefits. The Courtlight series takes place in a world different from our own. Our culture does not look upon women in the Court Companion's situation with envy. I can hear the literary snobs going on about how Terah Edun's book is a social commentary on the exploitation and power of women and sex. Maybe they are right, I don't know. I do know that this book was interesting and I enjoyed learning about Ciardis, Court Companions, and the world of the Courtlight series.
